Book Review and Giveaway: Henry and The Hidden Vegetable Garden

by Linette Gerlach on May 29th, 2008

Henry and the Hidden Vegetable Garden

I had the opportunity to take a look at a really cute new children’s book, about a boy named Henry. Henry and the Hidden Vegetable Garden could be about my son. We sat down and read the book tonight and then we talked about how we could add more vegetables into his diet. Then he wanted to eat some carrots and dip for his snack. Vegetables are never his first choice for a snack, so the book definitely had a positive affect. He’s claimed the book and carried it off to read it again.

Henry and The Hidden Vegetable Garden is about a little boy named Henry who likes TV, video games, and pizza. But he doesn’t care for his vegetables. One night at the supper table when his mother sees him hiding his vegetables, she decides to take action. She takes him to visit his cousin who lives on a farm.

While he’s there his cousin Huck introduces him to vegetables fresh from the garden, and shows him a secret hidden vegetable garden in the woods.

The book was written co-written by Kimberly Williams Paisley, who you may remember as the young bride in “Father of the Bride,” and “Father of the Bride 2.” She’s married to singer Brad Paisley and currently co-stars in the ABC television sitcom “According to Jim.” She has an 18 month old son, Huck, who helps spark her interest in getting children to eat their vegetables.

The book is co-authored by Kimberly’s father, Gurney Williams III. Gourney has been a writer and editor for more than 40 years. He’s also written several previous children’s books.

Henry and the Hidden Vegetable Garden was launched on May 1 to help promote the Love Your Veggies Campaign. The Love Your Veggies Campaign was created to help schools improve their students health and nutrition. You can find out more about the program at the Love Your Veggies website.

We are lucky enough to have 5 autographed copies of Henry and The Hidden Garden here at Robust Cooking to give away to five of our readers. To win a copy of Henry and The Hidden Vegetable Garden all you have to do is leave a comment on this post, telling us your favorite trick for getting your children to eat their vegetables. Leave your comment before Sunday June 8th at midnight (EST). This contest is open to US residents only. Good luck!

No kid, but I do have two nephews who love books. They both eat all veggies except green ones like broccoli. One trick is to tell them the broccoli is little trees, but I don’t think it works!

Start early with veggie choices so they get used to the taste and texture. Don’t serve things like french fries with meals that fill up their tummies and cause the vegetables to get left on the plate.

How can you go wrong with cheese dips made from melting cheddar and milk together. Anything smothered with cheese is good eats. It’s all in the dips. Just get or make healthy ones.

Involving the kids in growing, choosing, and shopping for the veggies really helps. Taking them to the farmer’s market and letting them talk with the farmers who are really excited about veggies. This year my kids, who normally turn their noses up at radishes, grew their own and could not wait to eat them.

I just repeatedly expose them to vegetables. I put them on their plates every day and it may take 5 or even 10 times of their seeing that vegetable before they taste it but they always have tasted it and when they see that everybody else is eating it without comment (and they do watch everybody else) they eat it too. I don’t believe in hiding them. I’ve never needed to do that.

There favorites is broccloi, cauliflower, Apparagus, Spinach and many more. I let them taste a bite when they were between 1-2. If they liked it good , which they usually did. But we all have different tastes.

Contests often work for the truly picky eater. There’s the Design a Veggie Monster contest.. all who enter must eat their creation. (What kid doesn’t like to play with their food?)

and then there’s the “Who can eat the most veggies contest.. as well as the Who Can Eat the Most Differenet Kinds of Veggies contest. these work especially weel for visiting grandchildren when a grandparent wants to balance out the goodies we tend to offer with healthier eating.

Also sending/donating seeds to their family veggie garden perks their interest in eating the vegtables their grandparents sent them to grow and then harvest and eat.

We name the veggies something different and after family members like Face peas, Mollie mushrooms, and kacky squash. She also helps me cook so that helps.

I offer them to her as the only thing to eat. Like when I know she’s getting ready to ask for a snack I’ll ask her if she wants some carrots. When I’m cooking dinner and the green beans are done, I’ll give her a few in a papercup. When it’s presented to her as the only option, she’s more apt to eat it.

They usually eat the cooked ones when it’s covered with cheese and the fresh ones with dressing or dips.

Like anything else - don’t make such a big freakin’ deal over it. Just assume they’re going to eat it and eat it myself.

Cut the vegetables in the shape of “french fries,” roast them, and call them “(whatever) fries.” If it’s my niece, I bribe.

Mince them up and put them in meatloaf, meatballs, etc. Also I’ve noticed sometimes veggies are better accepted in soups or raw.

I let my boys pick out the vegetables they want. I have no problem with them eating good vegetables. I guess I was lucky , my oldest would rather sit down and eat a can of peas instead of ice cream.

My children like almost any veggie, except peas. We always have a veggie garden and each child has a row, of their own, to plant their favorite veggies in and take care of and eat, when the veggies are ready.

For the most part my kids are good eaters, but when they start wanting junk food instead of healthy stuff I can usually lure them w/ “something new” they love trying “new” foods.
